Continua Install a Pitney Bowes Olympus Mailsorter in One of UK’s Largest Mailing Organisations

I am pleased to announce that Continua has recently installed a Pitney Bowes Olympus Multitier Mailsorter in one of our customer sites. The company, one of the UK’s largest organisations in the global mail, parcel and express sector, currently offers a comprehensive range of mail services to 250-300 customers (worldwide). The organisation required a solution to improve overall production efficiencies whilst reducing overall costs within its mailing operation.

With the expert help from our Equipment Sales team, the answer was simple - the Olympus Mailsorter. The sorter can process up to 24,000 mail pieces per hour and is capable of sorting outgoing mail into 120 different Post Office delivery sort codes enabling the company to access significant postal discounts. This discount combined with the mail volumes from its existing customers means that the organisation can now offer mail sorting services to companies whose run lengths would traditionally not qualify for postal discounts.

Automating this otherwise labour intensive process has numerous benefits including: operational efficiencies and improving tracking via ‘track and trace’ software. The Mailsorter’s small footprint, superior read rates and mail-tracking capabilities means that the product can grow in line with the company. At the current mailing volumes, we anticipate the company will have secured the return on the investment in just nine months.

In line with our unique multi vendor service offering Continua will service the Mailsorter utilising our on- site service support. This customer will now enjoy the financial and operational benefits of Continua serving its production printers, mail inserters and now the Olympus Mailsorter.

Interested how we can help your organisation – please call to find out more.

2011 is the year of Total Productive Maintenance

Firstly, I would like to thank everyone at Continua for their hard work over the past twelve months. We have had a successful year with the business securing significant service and maintenance accounts resulting in an 8% revenue increase year-on-year.

The positive response from the market indicates a growing demand for multi-vendor support and maintenance within the printing market sector and that customers see the value of a service that saves them money whilst allowing them to improve productivity. As I mentioned in my last blog entry, thanks to TPM, Antony Rowe CPI has been able to achieve over 10% OEE improvement on its key production line in just 10 weeks.

Although we had a great year, I suspect that due to the market conditions this year our growth could be more modest. To counter this, from the 1st January we started a programme that allowed customers to receive an even higher level of service from their Continua engineers. Now customers who have a dedicated on-site engineer can benefit from a range of workplace management practices – allowing them to drive productivity within their businesses.

As well as developing our services, we are keen to help our staff achieve their full potential. Congratulations are in order for Dean Outram, who was voted ‘engineer of the year’ by his peers at Continua. Dean was provided with the award at our yearly kick off meeting on the 27th January. As well as being singled out by his colleagues for his excellent work Dean received great customer feedback.

So what are my plans for 2011? My aim is to continue to refine the service we offer our customers. Currently we are the UK’s only multi-vendor maintenance service provider that delivers nationwide 24x7 support. I truly believe that our approach of supporting our customers with a locally-based network of over 70 multi-vendor trained engineers means that we offer customers a unique service in the sector. If we can continue providing high levels of service support to our customers while expanding into new service markets, 2011 could be a very exciting year for Continua. My advice – watch this spot!

Antony Rowe CPI achieves 10% OEE improvement with the Total Productive Maintenance strategy

Hello everyone and welcome to my first blog as the acting Managing Director at Continua. Brian Cuddy has done a fantastic job guiding Continua over the past few years and has left to take up a position at our parent company, Xerox. I first joined Continua in July 2007 as National Sales Manager after working for Xerox for over 20 years in numerous roles and positions. I am very much looking forward to the coming months and the great opportunity the role provides.

When I was asked to pick a subject for my opening blog it was easy following the success the team has had deploying the Total Productive Maintenance (TPM) strategy at Antony Rowe CPI.

The scheme has been a huge success helping develop closer relationships between equipment maintenance and Antony Rowe CPI’s operations team. The TPM strategy has been highly effective in improving equipment maintenance at the site. With our customer operations teams working all stages of the production line staff are able to action issues quicker with instant productivity improvement. The need for call-outs has also been avoided, as the scheme requires a focused approach to continuous improvement and improved predictive maintenance with the introduction of the ‘Mean Time To Repair’, which helps staff to map where key parts and technical documentation are kept on-site.

By tackling the root causes of common issues and having a more collaborative approach to resolving them we have been able to work with CPI to further enhance the efficient and excellent service we offer our customers.

So how do you measure the benefit I hear you ask? The TPM allows us to measure OEE by the ratio of availability, performance rate and quality rate which in time will enable businesses to access whether their production line is efficient overall.

The results are clear. Antony Rowe CPI has achieved over 10% OEE improvement on its key production line in just 10 weeks of the strategy being implemented. 80% of all problems were actioned on site due to the ‘Mean Time To Repair’ process reducing call-out charges and machine downtime. Additional successes secured can be seen in the improved supplier relationship, the reduction in fix times and total machine down times and the true partnership approach that can now be taken.

Furthermore I am happy to report that Antony Rowe CPI are looking to the future and continuing to work with us to extend the TPM programme to other parts of the business, maintain the continuous improvement of OEE at a management level and further develop the use of TMP lean tools. All of which we are extremely keen to help build upon and continue the success that Antony Rowe CPI has seen so far.

New Monthly Blogs from Continua

Hi everyone, welcome to the first edition of my monthly blog. It’s been another busy month at Continua. Despite the current economic climate, the team continues to go from strength to strength with every division of the company securing excellent wins this quarter, all of which has allowed us to grow our total revenue year on year.

Our maintenance division has won a number of new contracts with some of the UK’s leading print and financial institutions, meaning that we have surpassed all previous results. One example is Alpha Education, who have chosen Continua to support their fleet of IBM 4100 Continuous Feed printers. We also have some good news on our supply division as it has also grown by 28% and I am confident it will continue to grow at a steady rate in 2010, especially with the launch of the new range of Xerox alternative cartridges for HP printers. Our product sales are also up a staggering 1069% year-on-year as the market responds positively to our range of new and refurbished finishing and printing equipment.

That being said, we are keen not to rest on our laurels and have launched our Total Productive Maintenance (TPM) strategy. The aim is to develop a closer relationship between maintenance and our customer operations team, allowing us to raise the overall equipment efficiency (OEE). We know that our customers will see the value of it and the initial feedback we have had to date has been excellent.

So what can we expect in the coming months? This morning’s polls show Labour has 314 seats while the Conservatives have 259 – making the likelihood of a hung parliament a real possibility. The economy is still recovering, although very fragile, so indecision in Westminster is not what anyone needs in these times. That being said, I am optimistic about the outlook for the coming year. Our customer feedback shows that our range of services and products is really valuable to them, and our customer base is continuing to expand.

Finally, with IPEX just around the corner, the team is very busy. If you’re thinking of attending why not call by the Xerox stand 7-CD450 for a chat and tell us what you think of the TPM? Or maybe what you think of the newly launched Xerox CF Printer technology.
